Jun, Executive Director

Jun was born and raised in Japan. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University. His academic research focuses on the institutional determinants of representation and redistribution. In particular, Jun is interested in how choices of constitutional structures and electoral institutions translate into redistributive consequences. From 2008 to 2012, Jun served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Yale University, where he taught courses on Japanese politics, international relations, and the comparative political economy of East Asia. He has also taught at Wesleyan University and Franklin and Marshall College. Jun is the CEO and President of J Prep, a pioneering Tokyo-based language school, and the author of several bestselling books on education.

In addition, Jun served as a member of the House of Representatives in the Japanese Diet from 2002-2003.


Michael, Deputy Director of Instruction & Training

Michael was born in Singapore, but has spent more than half of his life studying and working in Australia, China, and Japan. He received his Bachelor of Arts in International Hospitality and Tourism Management from Bournemouth University. He left the hospitality industry to pursue his calling of being an educator. He has taught in Xiamen University and Pingxiang College in China as well as Kanagawa University. He brings over fifteen years of experience in teaching English as well as preparing students for the TOEFL, TOEIC, and IELTS exams.

Apart from enjoying his work, Michael likes to spend time with his family and is an avid fan of documentaries.


Aiko, Lead TOEFL Instructor

Aiko was born and raised in Tokyo, but also spent three years in the Republic of Panama and two years in the United States during her childhood. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University. During her junior year of college, Aiko attended the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) as an exchange student. After returning to Japan, Aiko found her passion in teaching English and pursued a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) with a specializiation in Computer Assisted Language Teaching at the Middlebury Monterey Institute of International Studies, where she was a Christine Casanave Scholar. After graduating, Aiko returned to Japan and has been teaching English and standardized test preparation courses, including TOEIC and TOEFL iBT, at J Prep and universities throughout Japan.


Teruyuki, Instructor

Teruyuki was born in Japan and later moved to Seoul with his family. He then moved to America and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he was a fellowship winner. Teruyuki received a Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College of the City University of New York. His focus of study was on oil painting. Teruyuki has held numerous art shows in galleries overseas, including a collaboration with Paul Smith. As a teacher, Teruyuki has taught English, Japanese, essay writing, and art to students of all ages. Teruyuki likes trying something new, and his next goal is to build a robot.


Mizuho, Instructor

Mizuho comes from Japan but has spent much of her life around the world in countries that include the United States, Spain, Guatemala, and Switzerland. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from California State University, Fresno and a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University. Prior to joining J Prep, Mizuho served as an interpreter for non-profit organizations as well as a clinical social worker and psychotherapist. Mizuho is committed to preparing her students to not only succeed on the TOEFL iBT, but also to have the skills and confidence to be effective communicators in English.


Robert, Instructor

Robert first became interested in language acquisition while studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, part of the University of London. He spent a year as an exchange student at Doshisha University in Kyoto, before returning to the UK to graduate with First Class Honors. Robert then entered the graduate school of the University of Amsterdam to study Cognitive Science. Focusing on psycho-linguistics, he designed and ran experiments that investigated the evolution of language, and subsequently returned to Japan to study first language acquisition at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Saitama. Robert joined J Prep in 2012 and has been leveraging his linguistic expertise to help develop materials that make learning English an effective and engaging activity.

As well as being a language geek, Robert has a strong interest in Japanese music, and regularly performs in koto and taiko concerts.


Jonathan, Instructor

Jonathan hails from the United States. He received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Georgetown University. He has also completed credits towards a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in modern American literature at the University of South Carolina. A lifetime educator, Jonathan has recently spent the past few years teaching English and literature at a private school in Bhutan. He also spent ten years as a literature teacher at the American School in London.

In his free time, Jonathan enjoys traveling – he has visited over 21 countries!


Amarsanaa, Instructor

Amarsanaa Davaasuren is a graduate student at The University of Tokyo, majoring in Quantum Computing. His research focuses on Quantum Machine Learning and fast measurement of superconducting qubits. He received his bachelor degree in Applied Physics from the University of Tokyo. As a former Mongolian representative in the International Chemistry Olympiad, he has taught and prepared high school students for national and International Chemistry Olympiads. Currently, he teaches physics at
J Prep. In his free time, he enjoys travelling and learning languages.


Hamza, Instructor

Hamza was raised in Pakistan. He did his undergraduate degree in Economics from a business school (LUMS) located in Pakistan. He also attended Waseda University as an exchange student during the undergraduate program. He worked for a well-known fast-moving consumer goods manufacturing firm before he joined a masters course in Economics at Waseda University. During the masters course he further explored his interest for research and teaching and proceeded to the PhD course at the same university. He likes doing research and teaching more than any other job and plans to attain a full-time faculty position at a university in Japan sometime in the near future. He likes travelling and have been to several countries. Apart from travelling, he also does professional photography and likes to cook.


Ayano, Instructor

Ayano was born and raised in Tokyo. She graduated from Tokyo Woman’s Christian University with BA in American Literature. She became interested in Asian languages, then decided to study at the University of Indonesia. She stayed on in South East Asian countries after finishing her studies. She started her career in an international hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, working with local and international colleagues. After returning to Japan, she was in the hospitality industry for a few years and then moved into the educational industry. She has been teaching at universities and in the corporate sector in addition to J Prep.
